A model can sit in more than one type, so the rows overlap. Fat tires, cargo decks and moped-style frames add weight because everything around the motor gets bigger: wheels, brakes, racks and the frame that holds them. Road and gravel e-bikes stay light by using a small battery and a mid-drive motor.

Up to about $3,000, no: cheaper bikes tend to be heavier because a big hub motor and a steel or thick aluminium frame are the cheap way to build one. Weight only falls once you're paying for carbon frames and mid-drive motors.
What the battery and motor add
- Battery: 8.5 lb is the median of the 82 models whose brand publishes a battery weight. It's the one part you can take off before lifting the bike.
- Hub motor: 6 to 10 lb at the wheel, most of it in the rear. Mid-drive motors weigh 6 to 7 lb but sit low and central, which is why a mid-drive bike feels lighter than the scale says.
- Everything else: e-bikes get bigger tyres, stronger rims, hydraulic brakes and racks rated for the load, which is where the rest of the difference from a 25 lb pedal bike comes from.
